Tools & calculators

These tools are designed as rough guides only. They use the 2024–25 resident tax rates and include the standard 2% Medicare levy. They do not factor in tax offsets, Medicare levy reductions, surcharge, HECS/HELP, or your personal circumstances.

Use them to get a feel for your position, then talk to us if you want tailored advice.

Income tax & Medicare levy estimator (2024–25)

Roughly estimate your income tax plus Medicare levy for the year, and whether you might be due a refund or have a payable based on tax already withheld.

Based on 2024–25 standard resident tax rates plus a flat 2% Medicare levy. Does not include tax offsets, family benefits, HELP/HECS, surcharge or other adjustments. If the estimate suggests a meaningful refund or payable, it is worth a conversation to confirm the numbers and check for planning opportunities.

Negative gearing impact (including 2% Medicare levy)

Estimate the after-tax impact of a single investment property for one year. This tool assumes you are an Australian resident and uses your approximate marginal tax rate (based on your income) plus the 2% Medicare levy.

This is a simplified illustration. It assumes the property’s net loss or profit is taxed at your marginal income tax rate plus 2% Medicare levy, using 2024–25 resident tax brackets. It does not account for all rules (for example, depreciation schedules, capital works limits, or phase-in Medicare thresholds). If the numbers look tight or the loss is large, it is worth reviewing the strategy with proper advice.

“Is an SMSF right for me?” detailed checker

Use our SMSF education tool to get a clearer feel for whether a Self-Managed Super Fund looks unlikely, possible or potentially well-suited to how you like to manage your super. It is general information only, not personal advice.

The checker covers:

  • Your combined super balance
  • How hands-on you want to be with investments
  • Your comfort with trustee responsibilities, risk and admin
  • Your willingness to pay for specialist SMSF, tax and legal support

Open the SMSF checker

The checker is an education-only guide and does not recommend that you establish, keep or wind up an SMSF. Any SMSF decision should be made with a licensed financial adviser and appropriate tax and legal advice.
